The old coal levels at Maes Mawr, Pontyberem were part of the Pontyberem Collieries, situated in the Gwendraeth Valley, Carmarthenshire. Located centrally to take full advantage of the extensive anthracite coal seams. The collieries opened in 1845. Photographed during aerial reconnaissance by RCAHMW on Oct 14th 2009.
