Mayhill housing estate grew up in response to the need for more housing in Swansea. Following the 1906 Housing Reform Act and the Garden Village Movement, an exhibition was launched to demonstrate that housing could be built on limited budgets. Mayhill was chosen as the site for the exhibition, as it was free from the city fumes and the land was owned by the council. 29 demonstration houses were built for the exhibition; Llewellyn Circle, Nicander Place and Tan y Marian Road. Following the success of the exhibition, in 1912 500 houses were planned. Due to the intervention of the First World War, only 6 of these were built, numbers 2,4,6,8,10 and 12 Islwyn Road. These still stand today. It was from the 1940s onwards that Mayhill developed as a housing estate, merging with Townhill (nprn 411242) to the west, to form a suburb of Swansea.
