Building work started on the new Maesteg Comprehensive school in autumn 2006, and was completed in September 2008. The school is based at the old Maesteg Washery site and was an initiative between Bridgend County Borough Council and a consortium formed by Babcock and Brown. Designed by Aedas and constructed by Cowlin Construction Ltd, the school has approx. 1,200 pupils on roll, age 11-18 and replaces former upper and lower premises. The former upper school has now been redeveloped as Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd, Bridgend County Councils first Welsh Language Medium Secondary School.
