Disgrifiad
A line of six rectangular buildings is shown on modern OS mapping. Field investigation revealed six or seven distinct features located at the foot of a slope on ground falling away into the Cletwr valley to the south. They are aligned north-east to south-west over a distance of some 140m. The group comprises two, possibly three, longhuts, a linear platform, a sunken shelter, a fold and two conjoined small pens (see NPRNs 418535; 418561-6).
A building portrayed on an eighteenth century Gogerddan Estate map of Cae'r Arglwyddes (1) and named `Llyast Llain Wen? lies in roughly the same location as these buildings one of which is probably that shown. The incorporation of the place-name element `lluest? suggests an origin in seasonal shepherding. However, the site is unusual in being located away from stream courses and in the number of structures associated with it [more than just a single longhut with one ancillary]. The estate map shows other `lluest? buildings on the north bank of the Cletwr itself. However, the `lluest? element in these names had gone by the time of 1st edition OS mapping and in this valley survives as hillside names (Lluest yr Afon-ddu to the north of the Llain Wen site).
