St John's church is located on the west side of Bridgend Road at its junction with Church Street. It was designed as a cruciform church in 1868 in Geometric style by architect John Pritchard of Llandaff, but was built without its transepts. A south transept was built in 1933 by Harry Teather, to a slightly modified design. The interior is an attempt at Butterfield-style polychromy - red brick patterns against grey brick and greenish-grey Bridgend stone - but is unconvincing. The sanctuary steps are of white marble with green lozenges and rectangles. Fittings typical of Pritchard include the font with octagonal bowl chamfered down to a circular stem, and a handsome stone pulpit. Stained glass includes works by Clayton & Bell.
