Bwlch y Garn is located towards the north end of the long ridge of Mynydd Carn-y-cefn that separates Ebbw Vale from Nant-y-glo and the Ebbw-fach valley. Lying immediately above and to the east of the site of the Ebbw Vale blast furnaces is an area of historic coal workings comprising disused pits, graded spoil tips, old quarries and a network of tracks and paths, both ancient and recent. Interspersed amongst those features are traces of a medieval settlement consisting of platforms with and without the foundations of linear buildings upon them (NPRNs 301146, 421646 & 421658), associated field banks and evidence for cultivation (both possibly later in date); all spanning an area of some 400m long (north by south) by 200m wide.
