Y Fron and its smaller neighbour to the north, Bwlch-y-Llyn, are situated five miles south east of Caernarfon. According to the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust, they are 'a mid nineteenth-century ribbon development partly along a road of c. 1809 to Pen yr Orsedd Quarry (NPRN 40565) and an industrial railway of c. 1864 leading to Chwarel y Fron (NPRN 400650). The village is characterised by substantial shops and chapels and a variety of buildings illustrating the evolution of architecture from the vernacular tradition through to the `industrial vernacular', yet without progressing beyond the intermittent ribbon pattern of settlement. Capel y Fron (NPRN 6920) is a substantial halo-arch chapel of the later nineteenth century; Capel Bwlch y Llyn (NPRN 6905) is a rare example of a architect-designed chapel built after the diwygiad of 1904, and includes a considerable amount of brick in the construction.'
The village school was built in 1844, but closed in 2015, with pupils moving to the 'new multi-million pound area school in Groeslon.' However, in 2018 the school re-opened as Canolfan y Fron - a 'community owned and run centre' which hosts 'an 18 bed Llety (deluxe visitor accommodation) a community shop, a treatment room, secure storage for outdoor equipment and four electric vehicle charging points.'
