DisgrifiadHolywell High School was maintained by Flintshire county council. Pupil numbers decreased rapidly in the early twenty first century - from 910 pupils in 2003, to 779 in 2009 and then 407 in January 2016. In September 2016 the pupils were moved to a new purpose built 'through school' (for children aged 3 to 16) on the Holywell High School's playing fields. It was then intended to demolish the old school and replace it with 'new, improved pitches once the school opened.'
