Whitland (Welsh: Hendy-gwyn) is a community and small town in Carmarthenshire, lying on the River Taf. Whitland takes its name from its medieval Cistercian abbey, now very much a ruin. The "white land" of the name (Latin: Albalanda) may refer to the famous White House (Welsh: Ty Gwyn) where Hywel Dda's parliament met, to the monks' unstained woollen cloaks.
Whitland was the first Cistercian house in Wales (NPRN 94300), drawing monks directly from Clairvaux Abbey in France. It was established by Bernard, Bishop of St Davids, on a site granted by John of Torrington.
