An area of shoaling shown on an historic Admiralty chart with depths of 2.25 and 3.5 fathoms. Described in Sailing Directions dating to 1884 as '? included within the 5 fathom line which surrounds the Wolves, and extends towards the Monkstone for 1 3/4 miles. The shoal is of foul ground, half a mile long, lying across for Lavernock point, and a quarter of a mile in width, the least water over it being 2 1/4 fathoms.'
