Event and Historical Information:
The PEGGY was a 35ton wooden sloop built at Chester in 1836 (official number 16431) and registered at Cardiff. At time of loss on 19 October 1873, the sloop was owned by Daniel Howells of St Dogmaels (also the master). The sloop was carrying culm from Swansea to Cardigan. On reaching the river Teifi, the sloop had to anchor to await the tide to cross the bar. The wind shifted to the north-northwest and the sloop began to labour and drag its anchors. A red signal of distress was raised and this was spotted by a farmer who rode to St Dogmaels coastguard station. The lifeboat was launched and at around 7am was able to take the crew of the PEGGY off. At 8.30am, the sloop's last anchor cable parted and it went ashore. The cargo was unloaded once the tide receded but the vessel itself went to pieces the following night.
