Entrance to a C19 coal level, shown on the 1st ed OS map. It forms a cutting in the hill side 20m long N-S by 8m wide, and 3m high at the uphill end where the former entrance is obscured by subsidence. Possibly a trial or shortlived level, as the small size of the accompanying spoil tip (nprn 507290) does not suggest a substantial working.
