Marked as an old coal level on the 3rd ed county OS map. The excavation is shown on the 2nd ed OS map and is therefore late C19. The site looks like a quarry, and may have been a quarry that revealed a coal seam, attempts to exploit which were subsequently made. There is a worked bedrock face 8m long N-S and 2m high, with spoil mounds in front of it.
Recorded as part of Uplands Initiative Survey. R Hayman, H&H, 09/11/2009.
