Event and Historical Information:
This Liberator was asisgned to 66 Bomb Squadron, 44 Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. It was one of 13 Liberators and Flying Fortresses tasked with bombing the U-boat pens at St Nazaire on 3 January 1943. The flight was returning when the leader believed they were off course and turned towards the Pembrokeshire coast to get a fix. Each returning aircraft was now running low on fuel and looking for a place to land. When engines 3 and 4 ran out of fuel, Liberator 41-23771 attempted a forced landing near the cross-roads at New House Farm, Puncheston. The aircraft disintegrated and 1 crewman was killed.
