An historic chart notes 'Soft Layer for Vessels' on this part of the foreshore. Contemporary Sailing Directions note for Mumbles Road (NPRN 506612) that 'Should a vessel have lost her anchors, she may safely run upon the mud abreast of Mumbles village'.
