The Blaenavon Branch of the LNWR across the heads of the S Wales valleys was opened in 1869 from Brynmawr to Blaenavon (nprn 67497). The station opened in 1869.

The retaining walls, retaining a steep bank on the downhill (N) side of the station and incorporating a culvert below the railway, are of snecked rock-faced stone. Many original copings have survived but some are fallen. A round-headed culvert opens into a deeply cut watercourse. The retaining walls are steeply raked up the bank of this watercourse, then continue parallel with the station, for 50m on the W side and 5m on the E side. On the W side this wall is 2m high, on the E side 1.5m high.
