Stone was quarried at Craig Cwlwm in 1908, under the management of Mr Mercer from London. The quarry was part of a larger enterprise known as The Cooperative Granite Quarries Limited, which was registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act in 1907. The company supplied stone to Lancashire County Council and Rochdale Corporation from about 1906 to 1908.
