Heol-Las is a 'large farmstead situated on the southern side of the Ebbw valley overlooking Risca, close to an old road that crosses the river via Pontymister bridge and heads over the hill to Machen. The buildings are terraced into the slopes and comprise a house, an attached barn and a separate stable. It is clear from early maps (such as the Tredegar Estate map of 1773 that the farmstead consisted of only these three buildings until the 1970s, when the house was considerably enlarged.'

'Clearly the house is the oldest structure here, and comprises a small dwelling of probable late-sixteenth or early-seventeenth century date. Despite its relatively small size, the few visible early features suggest this was a house of some standing and, having two full floors and an attic, it would have been much taller than most of the local upland farms. The downhill gable may have been reconstructed at some point, but the extensive modern alterations prevent more detailed analysis of the structure. The barn and stable were additions perhaps of the 1700s (both were certainly here by 1773).'
