A gravel pit (marked "Old Gravel Pit" on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1876) was possibly a ballast pit for railway use, lying west of Fochriw Pit Junction.
The pit was still visible as a depression, partially filled in, in 1994 but was destroyed when the landscape was later re-graded.
