1. This site appears between the first and second edition OS maps 1888 and 1904, when a Tudorbethan House was built overlooked by a very high motte site on an insula in the Usk. At that point the Victorians threw everything at the site, giving it a suspension bridge, modest kitchen garden, picturesque walks, plantations and arboreta, hothouses, a rookery, kennels and impressive carriage drive.
