1. Colliery shown on 1901 25" OS map; "Disused" by 1949 edition 6" map.
B.A.Malaws, 18 March 1999.

2. Milfraen Colliery was opened in 1865 and was operated by John Jayne until it was taken over by the Blaenavon Iron & Steel Co in 1884. Later linked to Garn Pits and Kays Slope, coal was last raised in 1933, after which the shaft was used for ventilation purposes only.

The colliery and an adjacent tip have been demolished and the site levelled. A flat-topped mound is on the E side of a private road to Blaentillery Colliery, approximately 150m E-W by 200. This extends to the W side of the road, where there are 2 surviving fragments of structures. These are structures built into banks, of which only the retaining elements have survived, 5x4m and 7x7m respectrively, and of bricks stamped 'Ebbw Vale'. Part of the boiler settings?
