Workmen's Institutes were once common in the industrialised areas of Wales, acting as a focus for social and cultural life in the coal and iron communities. The Oakdale Institute, near Caerphilly, was built in 1916 and closed in 1987, and was re-erected at the Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans, in 1995.
