The Taff Vale Railway was begun at Pontypridd in 1837, with I. K. Brunel as its chief engineer, and was the first major locomotive railway in Wales. The line opened in 1841 between Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff, originally to serve Merthyr's ironworks and later for the transport of coal to Cardiff docks (nprn 91412).
The National Grid Reference given (ST 1919 7484) is that of the TVR Headquarters building at Bute Road station (nprn 31744).
