A Roman fort, measuring approximately 120m by 110m, occupied the flat summit of a bluff above the confluence of the rivers Usk and Gavenny. Excavations in 1972-3 and in 1999 demonstrated that the first phase of the fort was in existence by AD 60 and this was followed by a second phase rebuild between AD 65 and 70. A third military phase was dated to sometime after AD 250, but not long afterwards the fort went out of use to be superceded by a civilian settlement which was occupied until at least the end of the fourth century.
