The Provisions Market was built in 1838 by Joseph Gulston of Derwydd Estate. A fire station and slaughter house were attached for several years and it was also used as an auction room and operatic theatre. Following closure in the 1960s, the building was used as a foundry.

[Additional:] The 'Pevsner' for Carmarthenshire suggests that the early Victorian Provision Market was moved (despite protests) from King Street to its present site by Thomas Gulston, 'who then charged high rents'. The square, rather prison-like range was built by William Harries, the Gulston estate builder, possibly to the designs of Edward Haycock, in severe neo-Tudor style with a striking principal doorway of red sandstone (SW elevation) in the otherwise grey stone exterior. A scheme for refurbishment and reuse was approved in 2016.
